1. Take the Training Course and Shooting Qualification Test
     (Fee for Training paid to Big Texas Training.)

The course is designed in modules an will include:
Module 1 - Laws that relate to weapons and to the use of deadly force
Module 2 - Handgun use and safety
Module 3 – Non-violent dispute resolution
Module 4 - Proper storage practices for handguns with an emphasis on storage practices that eliminate the possibility of accidental injury to a child.

Taking the training course for your new CHL will require 4 -6  hours of classroom instruction, and includes a written examination that you  must pass with a score of 70% or better. The written exam covers law, nonviolent dispute resolution, and safe handgun handling, use, and storage.

In addition there is a shooting qualification of 50 rounds on a state approved B-27 target.

The shooting practical requires you to fire fifty rounds (slow fire) from a handgun of .32 caliber or greater, 20 rounds at three yards, 20 rounds at   seven yards, and 10 at fifteen yards. There is no longer a designation for a gun type.  You may shoot either a semi-auto pistol or a revolver.  If you shoot a Taurus Judge you must use .45 LC not the 410 shot shells.

7 ring = 4 Points
On target, Outside rings = 3 Points

After you pass the written test and handgun qualification you will receive your “Certificate of Training” (CHL-100).

For that you must have:

  • Valid driver license or state issued identification.
  • Current demographic, address, contact, and employment information
  • Residential and employment information for the last five years (new users only)
  • Information regarding any psychiatric, drug, alcohol, or criminal history (new users only)
  • Valid email address
  • Valid credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express) ALL FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE

3. Get Your Fingerprints & Passport Photo

Passport Photos: RECENT UPDATE BY DPS! No passport photo needed if you have a Texas Driver’s License or ID Card,.

If you are an out of state applicant you will nee to provide 2 passport photosaccompanied by a Form CHL-6

Under State law Texas DPS must conduct a fingerprint based State and  FBI Criminal History background check as part of the application process for both original and renewal applicants.

As of March 1, 2011 applicants MUST use Electronic Fingerprint Submission through Safran MorphoTrust USA

4. Mail or upload through website (HERE) Paperwork to DPS

For on-line applicants you still must mail or upload to DPS a few follow-up documents.

  1. Original Certificate of Training (Form: CHL-100)
  2. CHL-6 / Photo Holder - (Only needed for out of state applicants)
  3. Receipt for fingerprints
  4. Receipt from your on-line application (w/ Bar Code) DPS refers to it as your “Check List”
  5. Any supporting legal documents necessary.

For all paper document applicants you must mail your entire completed document package with payment to the DPS. (Payment must be by: personal check, cashier’s check, money order)
